Income Tax Preparation VITA Program Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program site throughout the Rhode Island Community Action network assist low-income individuals and families with income tax preparation free of charge. Last year, RICAA’s network filed over 4,906 tax returns at no cost to low income families. Over $7,783,456 in refunds went back to the local economy, $3,090,804 of which was from Earned Income Tax Credits. Without this help, many low income families would have to pay hundreds of dollars for tax preparation services, and would not have the information they need to receive critical tax credits for which they are eligible.

Beginning January 14, 2013, RICAA’s network will once again assist low-income individuals with income tax preparation. Services are available for families with incomes less than $52,000. Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) amounts this year are as follows: With no qualifying children $464; with one qualifying child $3,094; and with three or more qualifying children $5,751, depending upon income.

VITA sites are seeking two types of volunteers to assist with this program:

  2. Client Intake Volunteers. These volunteers will assist clients with the intake process. Volunteers will verify intake sheets and make copies of all supporting documents.
